Be careful what you wish for.

There has been much comment elsewhere on this blog about whether Tenbury Wells needs a new Supermarket.

I recently read the following observations which I thought I would share.
  1. £10 spent in a Local shop is worth £25 to the local economy.
£10 spent in a Supermarket is worth £14 to the local economy,
as supermarkets tend to syphon money away to Head Office and shareholders.
  2. On average the local economy losses 276 jobs following the opening of a large supermarket.
  3. Local shops experience on average a 30% loss in trade.
  4. The loss of just 15% would cause many shops to close, this then causes a ripple effect as the more shops that close, the fewer people come into town and this reduces trade further in the remaining shops, leaving no choice but to use the large supermarket.

Whether you love them or hate them, small shops and small businesses are vital to the economy of a small town.

See how Tesco's tried to upset Tuffin's

your figures to not add up
how much money is going out of the town more people are going out
becasuse people can not afford to shop in Tenbury because it is to expensive
tenbury is dying
if there was a tesco people still go to the butchers and green grocers if is a compete lie that the big supermarkets are killing of business.

Well said these big multiple chains use bully boy tactics all the time. We have got good shops what more do people want, a bottle of coke is the same in spar as it is in tesco

I can't vouch for the figures as they are not mine. However, at the moment people have a choice, shop hear, or go elsewhere if they feel it's cheaper (including the fuel). Once a big supermarket arrives and all the small shops close, then you have no choice and the remaining supermarket will raise its prices as it has no competition. There will also be fewer jobs, as the big supermarket is unlikely to be using local businesses as suppliers, or having their vans serviced locally or using local builders or electricians or even local window cleaners. I believe at Tesco's in Worcester the gardeners that come to prune the shrubs in the car park travel down from Manchester. Complete madness. The list just goes on.

what do the local shops in tenbury sponsor

WOW!!! I BET THEY HAD TO INTO THE RED TO SPONSOR YOU LOT

Tesco,s annual profits, total more than £2.5bn, or close to £5,000 profit every minute.

Sponsoring Ludlow football club must have really hurt!

If a shop in Tenbury gives £1 to a good cause that would be a higher percentage of their profit than £300,000 given by one Tesco store.

Never mind sponsoring the football team, get some more staff on the payroll to keep the shelves full.Every time i shop there you cannot get what you want

There is plenty of life in Tenbury without Tesco, keep them outif you dont the only shop you will be visiting will be tesco with inflated prices

Many things are cheaper in Tenbury than they are at Tesco.
One person asked what do Tenbury shops do for the community. To list just two examples, SPAR helped towards getting the cinema going and Edward Gallimore sponsors Dr Burnetts "What's On".

If you want to shop at Tesco go online and do it .Keep Tenbury free from supermarkets we have enough traffic congestion as it is

Scott Wilson, the consultants engaged by Malvern Hills District Council to review the Tenbury Wells Conservation Area are the same Scott Wilson, who are primary Consultants to Tesco's in various matters including sighting and planning new stores. Could be a case of Trojan Horse!

Seeing the comment about Tesco sponsoring Ludlow Town Football Club, I visited the Football Club's website, where it says "The SBS Stadium is sponsored by Shropshire Building Supplies Limited". They make no mention of any sponsorship from Tesco. Perhaps that is why it is called the SBS Stadium - not the Tesco Stadium.

Perhaps they gave a free pack of oranges for half time!

They dont give much away, i can tell you that as an employee!

Whether your figures are right or not, the message is clear enough. If you buy a the larger chain stores, one does not have to wonder why the little shops have to close.
Whilst the chains are often cheaper than the smaller shops, the service offered is often dreadful. It's not all about buying cheap! Besides of which consider how the supermarkets can offer their goods cheaper:
- low wages
- lower quality (certainly with fresh goods)
- lower service

BTW: I grew up in Tenbury but now live overseas. Good to see someone telling the news as it is. Well done WR15!
