The MHDC design competition has attracted a number of entries ranging from the futuristic to the boring and uninspired.The competition was for local architects to design public toilets to replace the ones damaged and subsequently demolished following the July 2007 floods.

Some of those are cute - the Oast houses one for example. Some are good and might work well - Pictures NT3 and NT4. The others are just like "Have you even SEEN the town?! That'll look totally out of place!"
What's the betting they'll choose the latter...
Surely the Hop Kilns won't get the go ahead? A Councillor had a letter in the Advertiser saying that the new toilets would be built out of the way, to give a better view from The Clockhouse, and to leave more open space. Didn't another Councillor have a letter in a few weeks back saying you can't build there anyway, as it is a flood plain, and you aren't allowed to build on a flood plain.
It always seems what suits these councillors .They should have saved the original ones

I think that we are all aware that Insurance is paying for the toilets, but two Town Councillors have written to the press. One saying that perhaps the toilets need not be rebuilt and the other saying that they should be built so as not to spoil the view from a local restaurant.
Although MHDC organised the design competition, there are some who wonder if they will decide on the cheapest option and pocket the rest of the insurance payout to fund something in Malvern!
I'm sure they wouldn't be that underhand!

The modern designs look horrible. One seems to have been designed for the Space Shuttle Terminal; another looks like it belongs on the Costa del Sol. How can anyone seriously submit designs like these, given that the location is in the Conservation Area of a historic market town, opposite a striking black and white pub? Does anyone know who designed what? People should respect the existing streetscape when they come up with a design. A copy of the Ombersley Telephone Exchange would have been a better bet than most of these.
